The Most Vulnerable

Based on available information and clinical expertise, adults who are 65 years and older, along with people of any age with serious medical conditions are at higher risk of severe illness from COVID-19.

People with any of the below underlying conditions are most vulnerable to the disease:

  • Asthma; whether moderate or severe                                                                             
  • A chronic lung disease
  • A serious heart condition
  • A condition that can compromise immunity; such as undergoing cancer treatment, or a transplant (bone marrow or organ). This also includes immunity deficiencies, poorly controlled HIV or AIDS, habits like smoking, and the prolonged use of medication that weakens immunity, such as corticosteroids.
  • Severe obesity, which is indicated by a body mass index or BMI of 40 (or higher)
  • Chronic illnesses, like diabetes mellitus
  • Chronic kidney disease, especially one that requires dialysis
  • A liver disease
